Who is the Cincinnati Medical Association and Why Should I Join?

The Cincinnati Medical Association was founded as a professional society because of segregated care in Cincinnati, Ohio. The purpose is to support the delivery of quality medical care to the underserved segments of the Greater Cincinnati Community and to serve as an advocate for the underrepresented population of the Tri-State Region as well as enhance the professional practice of minority physicians. In addition, the CMA is providing a forum to the Cincinnati area where physicians can tackle the ever-evolving health issues affecting the medical profession and the health care system.

Ten Reasons for Joining the CMA

1. Combating the current face of racial discrimination

Historically discrimination was such that African American physicians were denied hospital privileges and access to facilities in which to provide care for their patients. Nearly one hundred years later overt discrimination less rarely occurs, yet micro- aggressions, covert discrimination, and backroom decisions still affect the ability of physicians of color to care for their patients. This professional society provides its members a venue and voice to respond to these occurrences.

2. Managing social isolation

The practice of medicine in our country has evolved to a system predominated by physicians being employed by hospital systems and less by solo or small group practices of the past. As this transition has occurred, African American physicians have become even more socially isolated. The CMA provides a venue for social engagement with individuals who are more likely to share common experiences.

3. Health Advocacy for our communities

Healthcare disparities play a significant role in the illnesses experienced by underserved communities. Giving voice to these issues is a key role of this organization. The CMA mission of advocacy and service to underrepresented population of the Cincinnati area is best accomplished by members dedicated to this mission. This organization provides a venue in which information specific to these communities is shared and scientific, cultural, and social competency is utilized to address these disparities.

4. Recognized resource for Healthcare issues

Governmental, business, media, and community organizations oftentimes have inquiries regarding healthcare issues which affect underserved populations and/or its providers. Membership provides a clearinghouse for member’s views and a more representative and credible response.

5. Community outreach

Members of our communities benefit from education to prevent and treat health problems. The CMA organizes and participates in community events for this purpose. Collaboration with community agencies is a hallmark of these activities.

6. Continuing education for members

The CMA is composed of physicians from multiple specialties which thereby allows its members exposure to different specialty perspectives in an atmosphere of familiarity and a common mission. Member education also derives from exposure to non-member medical professionals, pertinent non-medical professionals, and resources pertinent to members, patients, and the communities that we serve.

7. Membership Directory

The CMA provides a directory listing its physicians by specialty and office location(s). This is presented in a variety of social media as well as a print menu. This is a powerful tool for public education as well as marketing for practice building.

8. Member Advocacy

Enhancing the professional practice of minority physicians goes beyond marketing. The CMA provides a forum for discussing controversies and challenges which inevitably arise during the course of careers. Our organization has a history of being a sounding board and a vehicle of action, at the request of members.

9. Developing a Diverse Physician Workforce

Achieving a multispecialty physician workforce that is committed to advocating and serving the underrepresented communities of Cincinnati is an ongoing aspiration of this Organization. The CMA is a resource and advocate to hospital and healthcare systems, recruitment agencies, and individuals as we strive for workforce diversity across the medical specialty spectrum.

10. Building our physician pipeline

The future for a diverse workforce resides in the youth of our community. Our members serve as mentors, role models, and guest speakers, from the elementary school through the post-doctorate (residency/fellowship) levels. The CMA and several individual members maintain endowed scholarships at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine for the purpose of providing financial assistance to medical students.
